Kickass Motorcycling moments in Bollywood

Recently we did an article about kickass motorcycle movies which every biker should watch. Unfortunately, we have never had any movie dedicated to motorcycling or based on the theme of motorcycles in our Indian film industry, fondly known as Bollywood. Having said that, there have been a handful of movies where the motorcycle has played a role of more than a mere prop. Here is a list on that.

Dhoom – The first offering from the popular Yashraj series had a fair share of superbikes zooming across Mumbai. This was one movie which indeed made motorcycling look kickass. The two sequels also had motorcycles play a part in the movies but none as significant as the first one.

Saathiya – There have been quite a few mainstream Bollywood actors singing songs on motorcycles starting from Amitabh Bachchan singing Rote hue in Muqaddar ka Sikandar to ShahRukh Khan singing in Deewana and Kabhi haan kabhi naa to the recently released movie Roy where Ranbir Kapoor sings Tu hai ki nahi. But my favourite among all of these is the song Oh humdum suniyo re from the movie Saathiya which has Vivek Oberoi riding a Kawasaki Eliminator across the streets of Mumbai and the Juhu beach. The peppy music by A.R. Rahman, Vivek Oberoi’s charm and the whole essence of the song makes it my favourite motorcycle song in Bollywood.

Bobby – This coming of age romance was a trendsetter of sorts. Among the star cast of the movie was a Rajdoot GTS 175 which became so popular after the movie that it fondly came to be known as Bobby. Continuing the legacy forward, the heartthrobs of Bobby, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia were seen romancing on a huge cruiser 32 years after Bobby in a lesser known movie called Pyaar Mein Twist.

Do Dooni Chaar – Speaking about Rishi Kapoor, brings me to a heart warming movie called Do Dooni Chaar. This movie is perhaps the only movie in the history of Bollywood which has a premise loosely based on a Two-wheeler, in this case the legendary Bajaj Chetak. The movie revolves around a middle class family of four and their struggle to upgrade from a rickety old scooter to a car. This cute little movie has a feel good factor to it and the Chetak plays a very important part in that.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – The gorgeous Katrina Kaif kick starting her friend’s Royal Enfield Classic 350 and riding it across the freeway only to tell Hrithik Roshan that she doesn’t likes keeping things “Unfinished”! Oh, that is what I call a true “Kickass Bikerni” moment!

Phool Aur Kannte – Ajay Devgan announced himself to Bollywood by doing a full split on two RX 135s. The moment has gone down in the history of Bollywood so much so that it has become Ajay Devgan’s trademark and he has repeated the same stunt several years later in the Golmal series on Superbikes, Cars and unbelievably on horses too! Recently, in an ad for Volvo, famous Hollywood actor Van Damme performs a similar stunt on two Volvo busses!

Sholay – This is without a doubt the most iconic motorcycle moment in the history of Bollywood. There will be very few people in our country of over billion people who haven’t seen the “Ye Dosti” song on the Bullet with the sidecar. There have been several movies with the opening credits of the lead actor(s) riding a motorcycle but none has captured the feeling of biking and brotherhood like Sholay.

So till the time we get a genuine motorcycle based movie in Bollywood we will have to make do with these. Did I miss out on your favourite motorcycle moment in Bollywood? Until and unless, your favourite motorcycle moment is that of the weird and hairy Sant Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh riding customized bikes in ridiculous looking costumes from the movie MSG, feel free to add them in the comments below.
